Question Title What is Connection Speed?
What is Connection Speed?

Connection Speed is the speed of the connection in bps (bits per second) that determines the rate information can be transferred from the Internet to a particular computer. This depends on the type of connection, ie modem, cable, DSL, Fios, etc.

It is measured by the number of units, or bits, of information transferred in a second. Bits per second is abbreviated bps; a thousand bits per second is abbreviated Kbps; and a million bits per second is abbreviated MBps. For example, a 14.4k modem with a connection speed of 14.4 Kbps is much slower than a Cable or DSL modem with a connection speed of 1 MBps. And all the above are much more slower than even the slowest the Fios connection speed

What affects my connection speed?

When you connect to the Internet using Verizon Fios or any other ISP, the speeds that you will experience will vary based on a variety of factors, including the following:
  • Configuration of your computer
  • Condition of the wiring at your location
  • Your home network configuration. This includes, number of home computers and other networked devices using the available bandwidth at the same time.
  • Network or Internet congestion
  • Server and router speeds of the Web sites you are accessing
